Trainee Programme
At GRG's we are dedicated to training professional raft and kayak guides. Every year we hire 2-3 trainees guides and over a few years train them up so at the end they will have all the necessary qualifications, skills and knowledge to work in the industry as Junior Guides as well as provide ongoing training to ALL our guides no matter how much experience they have.
There is currently little regulation in the whitewater industry in Nepal which means that pretty much anyone could open up their own company and start running trips, a scary thought, and unfortunatley it does happen.
We know how dangerous this job can be which is why we are committed to training new guides at an international level.
It is very difficult for young guides to become competant raft guides due to the costs of the training involved, for example, a first aid course which is recognised internationally can cost in excess of 15,000 nrs which is why you find many guides who do not hold the correct qualifications.
We are hoping that by giving our younger members of staff all the correct qualifications and bulding up their experience we can improve the quality of staff in the whitewater industry in Nepal.
Whilst the trainee guides are with us we cover the following topics:
-
Swift Water Rescue Technician
-
First Aid
-
Wilderness First Aid
-
Emergency Response
-
River Theory
-
Raft Guide Training
-
Kayak Training
-
English Lessons
- Canyoneering training
-
Office Skills
-
Trip Logistics
-
Campsite Organisation
-
Cooking and food hygiene
Training the guides is very costly as we have to pay for their training courses, certificates, food, accommodation, equipments and we offer them passports, health care etc, however we believe it is very worthwhile for the future of the whitewater industy. We traing our guides in ALL aspects, not just one. All our guides can kayak, raft and canyon as well as work in the boat house on repairs, set up camp and cook for up to 100 people!
Read our blog to see how our current trainees are getting on. Hopefully we'll be creating the next generation for Himalayan Whitewater Champions!
