Himalayan Whitewater Championships

The Himalayan Whitewater Challenge is a great kayaking Rodeo which is held annually in Nepal on the Trisuli or Bhote Kosi river. It gives Nepali kayakers the chance to compete at an international standard and show the world what they can really do. We often see competitors from the UK, America, Canada, South Africa, Japan and even Russia!

Our very own Maila has won this competition three times and come second three times. Not to mention Goma, our female safey kayaker and trekking guide took the female title in 2010. Also competiting for us is Jeevan who has taken the junior title in the passed, Shanu babu who is legendary at his freestyle and Kali Gurung.

The event combines a Slalom comprised of 15 gates on the ‘Surprise Rapid’, 3 or 4 of which are upstream, making the kayakers cross the main flow of the river, really testing their skills. Then there is a freestyle and on the final day we have a down river race over 17km long, a lot of which was flat water.

The Rodeo isn’t just about kayaking, it ’s a great way to spend a weekend and the parties in the evening sort out who the real kayakers are.   

On the final day, awards and prizes are given out to the winners of each event and an overall Champion. Much needed kayak equipment is given to the locals and internationals win tour and adventure packages such as Bungee Jumps and Safari trips.
