Lonely Planet Nepal Trip Advisor

Poon Hill

This is, in our opinion, the best short trek that you can do in Nepal. It enables you to enjoy the breath-taking scenery of some of the highest Himalayan peaks, get closer to the mountains that you could ever imagine in such a short time and will have you trekking through Rhododendron forests, through rural villages, to natural hot springs and more. From the terraced rice-fields above Pokhara, we walk along good trials through picturesque Gurung villages and the worlds biggest rhododendron forest, which in spring bursts in many different hues.

The dawn views of Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchare and Annapurna South from the vantage point of Poon Hill is a major highlight of this trek. Short and fairly easy this trek is perfect started for those not sure of their walking ability, or those that wish to make the most of only a few days. This trek can be lengthened or shortened to fit you time table and can be done in as little as three to four days. But to get the most out of the trek 5-7 days is recommended. And enjoy the hot springs on day 4, great to ease away the ache in your legs after 4 days of trekking!

Itinerary

DAY 1: An early start this morning from Pokhara as we catch a bus to Nayapul where we will start this trek. Just 3200 stairs to climb today as we make our way up to Ullerie. We will catch out first glimpse of a mountain today and this is a great warm up for the following days.

DAY 2: After our 'trekky brekky' of porridge and eggs we make our way up to Gorepani (translated means Horse water, as this is where many of the pony's would stop for a break on their long journey from Tibet). Staying at our favourite tea house with outsanding views.

DAY 3: Up before the crack of dawn today to get to Poon Hill before the sun rises. You will get a stunning Panaromic view of some of the highest mounatins in the world. A view you won't foget in a long time! we will then make our way back to Gorepani for breakfast and then trek onto Tadapani.

DAY 4: Today we walk from Tadapani to Jhunu, our favourite place. We should arrive around 3pm, giving us plenty to time to spend the afternoon in the Natural Hot springs, Tatopani. This will ease away any pain you may be experiencing from trekking. And those that are brave enough can jump into the freezing Modi river running by!

DAY 5: Our last day. A 16km trek from Jhunu to Nayapul where we will have a bus waiting for us to take us back to Pokhara where a nice cool beer will be waiting for us.
