When to travel

Nepal has two main seasons for travel. The first is the spring/summer season which runs from March until the end of May. This is the hottest time of year and also the prettiest as all the wild flowers and Rhododendrons are out in full bloom. It’s a great time for trekking, though views are not always guaranteed and rain showers should be expected. The main season for travel in Nepal is the autumn/winter season which runs from mid September until December. This is the time of year when the skies are the clearest and the weather the driest making for exceptional views and trekking. Later in this season, the weather can get very cold and trekkers need to be adequately prepared. Outside of this is the main winter season form December to February, trekking is possible at lower altitudes and general touring is also doable. June to August is the monsoon time in Nepal.

Avoid offence.

When you travel into a different culture, it’s important to act respectfully and in a manner that will not cause offence to the people who live there. Take time to learn about the culture and social habits of the people before you travel. Here are some tips we think will help for Nepal-

• Dress appropriately. Don’t wear revealing clothes as this is frowned upon in Nepalese society. Dressing modestly will earn you respect form the locals.
• Be aware that in Nepal people use their right hand to eat with and their left hand for hygiene purposes. You should never offer your left hand to anyone.
• At the dinner table, do not touch anyone else’s plate or food. This is considered as “Jhuto” or polluted.
• Nepal is a developing country and most people struggle to put food on their families’ plates, it is therfore considered offensive not to finish your meal. Don’t put more food on your plate than you think you can eat. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask some rice to be taken off your plate BEFORE you have touched it.
• Nepali people do not openly show affection towards the opposite sex. Try and avoid being intimate with your partner in public, but don’t be alarmed if you see boys holding hands with other boys and vise versa, this is common social behavior in Nepal.
• Try not to encourage begging by handing out sweets, chocolates or pens to children.
• Don’t point or touch your feet to anyone else, as this is considered offensive, also a Nepali person will never step over your legs, so be aware when you are sitting on the floor.
