Langtang Trekking Langtang is towards the north of Kathmandu and just south of the Tibetan border. It is sandwiched between the main Himalayan range to the north and a slightly lower range of snowy peaks to the south. To the west of Langtang is Ganesh Himal with peaks between 6,000 to 7,000 meters. The name Langtang originates from two different words ‘Lang’ and ‘Tang’. Lang means Yak and Tang means to follow. At one time this formed a trade route for the Yak herders into Tibet. In 1971 this region was recognized as Nepal’s first Himalayan National Park and is now a protected area. Most trekking within this area falls within the boundary of Langtang National Park covering an area of, 1,710 square kilometers. The chief attraction of this park is the Langtang range in the north and a number of lakes in the south. The main ethnic groups of this region are Sherpa’s and Tamangs whose religion, culture, languages and dress are similar to that of the Tibetan people. The Langtang area is a less trekked but superb area for trekking, the region is loaded with breathtaking scenery, views, lakes and traditional culture |

The languages, culture and the dress of Helambu Sherpa are different from those of Solokhumbu Sherpa. On the way to any Langtang trek you can also do Helambu trek either from Gosaikunda or from Ganja La pass (5106m).The route from Ganja La pass is quite difficult in winter because of height and usually snow-covered trail. |

Gosikunda Gosaikunda lies north of Kathmandu. The Gosaikunda loop is quite remote and thinly populated area. Gosaikunda, a glacier lake, is the most famous one with several others glacier lakes adjoining it. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit the lakes during a full-moon festival in August and Hindu people believe that the God Mahadev (Shiva), intoxicated by grief due to his wife’s (Parbati) death, felt thirsty so he hit the stone with his holy stick, thus creating the lakes. In the same place Lake Gosaikunda originates and Hindu people believe that the image of Mahadev can be seen in the middle surface of the water. The lake is also scared to Buddhists. |
