Northern India

India’s vastness in size, population and diversity make it a daunting yet rewarding and unforgettable place to travel in. The continent encompasses a great variety of geographical diversity from the mountains in the north and the great Thar Desert to the flat dry plains and lush tropical jungles in the south and the pristine beaches surrounding most of the country. A trip to India is like a wake up call for your senses. Sights, smells, sounds, beauty, poverty, wealth and the weird and wonderful all combine to make it one of the most exotic and exciting places to travel.

India is the originating place of three of the world’s oldest religions, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It is home to many fine buildings, monuments, temples and monasteries, with ornate and lavish architecture. India’s colorful history and invasion of many cultures over 1000’s of years has forged this unique and wonderful place which has captured the hearts and imaginations of many a traveler, drawing them in and loosing them in its vastness.

Two of the most amazing and beautiful places to travel in India are Sikkim and Ladahk. Sikkim in the far north east and Ladakh in the far North West are both Himalayan provinces and both offer to the traveler a mystical allure that is often associates with the Himalaya...

Sikkim

With natural beauty beyond compare, most people consider Sikkim to be a slice of heaven. Tropical valleys and stunning mountain peaks dot this region in the far north eastern pocket of India. Bordered by Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan, its tropical valleys are fed by the snow melts and support vast quantities of rice, mustard, mangos, bananas, papaya, wheat and millet. In this region, the native Lepcha people peacefully live side by side with Tibetan Bonpo’s and Nepalese. Though the area comprises mostly Nepalese Hindus, it is predominantly a Buddhist region. Apart from the stunning scenery in this area, there are many wonderful monasteries to explore. The nature and culture in this area is rich and diverse.

Sikkim also offers some very spectacular and un spoilt trekking with excellent views of the beautiful Mt Khanchenjunga. You may chance upon the shy Musk Deer or the exotic and very rare Red Panda perched among the tree- tops. Revel in the excitement of being part of a unique culture, a rich tapestry woven with legends, myths, rituals and festivals.

Ladakh

Ladakh is a sparsely populated, far flung pocket in India’s far North West. This mountain paradise is a high altitude snow desert cradled by the Karakoram and Great Himalaya Mountain ranges. It is criss-crossed by innumerable razor-shape peaks and ridges and often referred to as “Little Tibet” or “Shangri-La.” Ladakh is an inspiring, barren and breathless place, home to one of the last remaining pockets of Mahayana Buddhism, medieval monasteries, high mountain passes and quaint townships.

Dharamsala on the other hand is a lushly forested hill station and is famed as being the home to the Tibetan government in exile and also the home of the Dalai Lama. This chilled out place is a haven for travelers and back packers, you can just relax, meditate, do yoga, learn about Buddhism or go trekking in the surrounding hills. This bustling hill station also commands some of the most impressive Himalayan views on offer.

When to travel

India is such a huge and geographically diverse country; it has a huge range of weather conditions. The best time to visit India is November through to March. During the early part of the year in the southern plains it can extremely hot making travel difficult. Also India has a ranging monsoon which at certain time can dump phenomenal amounts of rain in one area. The monsoon usually happens in June through to August. Some tourist towns completely close during this monsoon low season. Ladahk is not affected by the monsoon itself, but rain in the surrounding areas can shut down the roads. In the northern parts, Ladahk and Sikkim, November through to January can be extremely cold. The summer months of June through to September are considered as the best times to visit these mountain areas.

India Tours

Ladakh by Mountain Bike

A beautiful but very challenging journey from the lushly jungled foothills to the arid high altitude plains surrounding the ancient city of Leh. This Himalayan journey takes you into the heart of Himalayan India. The scenery changes along the road as we climb towards the Himalaya; we leave behind green tea gardens and fields, entering broad valleys and pine forests, along the way we pass through many traditional wooden housed villages before the challenging assent into the sparse high altitude dessert with breathtaking views of the mountains. Finally we come to a rest in Leh, overlooking the rich Indus Valley.
While visually stunning, physically it’s a challenging tour for the fit rider. There is a lot of climbing and big altitude gains during this ride with some challenging passes. The terrain is mostly pitched road with a few off road sections.

Ladakh Jeep Safari (17 Days)

For centuries a mystic aura has surrounded the trans - Himalayan regions of Tibet, Spiti, Lahaul and Ladakh which have remained in partial isolation to this day. These are some of the ultimate journeys of the Himalaya.

Ladakh Jeep Safari is certainly one of them, a rolling epic journey that takes us from the bustling, sweltering heat of Delhi, high up onto the windswept desert like regions around Leh. Its a memorizing journey with a distinct feeling of going back in time. Historical villages, Monasteries and forts are all there to be discovered by you along the way. Our trip ends in Leh in the surprisingly fertile Indus Valley. The highlights of this jeep safari are uncountable, from the lush green hills and apple orchids of Shimla, to the ancient civilization and history of the rich Indus, Spiti and Bhaga Valleys of Leh.

Described perfectly by Rudyard Kipling "Surely the Gods live here, this is no place for humans".

Darjeeling the Jewel of India (10 days)

ImageThis enchanting 10 day tour and trek takes in the highlights of Darjeeling, the jewel in India’s Crown. You spend some time exploring the rustic yet charming hill station that at one time was part of the British Empire. Views from Darjeeling may be as fickle as the Himalayan weather, but when it’s clear they are simply mind blowing from Cho Oyo to Kanchengunga. This impressive mountain looms over Darjeeling like its guardians and its name certainly suggests the same thing. This Tibetan name - Khang (snow), chen (big), dzong (fortress or treasury), nga (five) – five peaked snow fortress. And the locals truly believe that it does stand guard over this majestic hill station where tea plantations thrive and the Raj era charm still clings to the musty British style architecture. Even the ancient monasteries still live and breathe to the daily beat of Monks drums and cries of conch shells.
